The archaeolgical research project in Cetara, is afive-year-long program which is going to cover all Cetara area, both on soil and in water.
It seems that the the first inhabitants of Cetara area were the Saracenic people, in the middle of IX century a.c., who set a Muslin enclave there. At the end of the century Muslims were not able to face Christianization’s force. This particular moment seems to be proved by the construction of what today is known as San Pietro Church, in which there is a plaque graved both in Latin and Arabic languages.
The research project is composed of soil and underwater digging, utilizing the most avant-garde geo-magnetic and sonar utilities. At the end of the mission the whole area will undergo the development of archaeological touristic circuits, documentary production, scientific pubblications, events and exposition in dedicated museums phases.
