Our research project is part of Tuoro city program for the “sustainable tourism development” .
The mission points to understand an important historical event: the battle between Hannibal multiethnic army and Caio Flaminio Nepote Roman legion, which took place on that soil in 217 b.C. and in which Hannibal won against Caio Flaminio Nepote.
Tuoro sul Trasimeno is located on a little mountain, just on the valley in which the battle took place.
The bronze helmet, the orator statue and the head of the spear findings prove that the battle actually took place just in the valley, in the north of the lake.
The archaeological research project will be focused both on soil digging and in underwater digging because, as historical sources teach us, roman soldiers, to escape from Hannibal’s trap, tried to save themselves by throwing themselves in the lake, sinking just because of the heavy armour.
The under lake environment is characterized by the presence of mud, which probably saved armour’s metal and leather. In this case Trasimeno Lake will be the first archaeological site in which good state roman armours are found.
